The nucleus contains protons and neutrons while the shells contain electrons. Atom is the smallest unit of any element which can participate in a chemical reaction. Each atom of any element contains a central nucleus and outer shells. The central nucleus contains positive protons and neutral neutrons. The outer part of the nucleus has shells. These shells are occupied by electrons. So the model must be a representation of how electrons are distributed in the shells of an iron atom.
